Our History

The Zimmerwald Estate Barn & Grainery is owned by Craig and Lalisa Carpenter of Ellenboro, North Carolina. The Carpenter family ancestors migrated from Switzerland in the 1700s. While in Switzerland the family, then known as Zimmermans (later translated to Carpenter once in the United States), founded a small town named Zimmerwald. It is known as one of the most beautiful places to visit in Switzerland. The word "Zimmerwald" means "The Keeper of the Trees". The Carpenter family property is a tree farm and a place that is beautiful to us. Thus the name Zimmerwald Estate was born.

The barn has been built from the ground up by Craig Carpenter, his brother Timmy Carpenter and other family and friends. Many of the trees use to build the barn were harvested from their property and were prepared at their saw mill on site. The idea for a wedding venue began was a dream of their daughter, now Zimmerwald's Estate manager Katie Carpenter White. What began as a simple dream and a sketch on a piece of notebook paper, has now become a reality. We are extremely excited to be a place where beautiful family memories can be made and couples can begin their happily ever after!
